Marlins Lose After Erasing Seven-Run Deficit

The Marlins fought all the way back from a seven-run deficit before falling 12-7

The Miami Marlins came back from a seven-run deficit before allowing late runs in a 12-7 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Monday.

Miami was down 7-0 when the fourth inning began and that's when it scored five quick runs. A couple of innings later, the Marlins would add two more runs to tie up the game at seven. The tie was short-lived however as Atlanta scored a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning.

Fighting for their playoff lives, this was a game the Marlins could not afford to lose. Not only is every win important this time of year, but Atlanta has one of the worst records in baseball. The Marlins had an opportunity to gain ground in the Wild Card race with a win.

Miami had 17 hits, but only one of those was an extra-base hit. Besides Ichiro Suzuki's 15th double of the season, Miami had 16 singles. Suzuki had two of those hits as part of a three-hit day for the veteran. Dee Gordon, Martin Prado, Christian Yelich, Justin Bour and Derek Dietrich all had two-hit days.

Dietrich entered the game when Marcell Ozuna was forced to leave with a bruised left knee. Ozuna was hit with a pitch and is considered day-to-day.

The opportunities for Miami were there, but the team did not cash in enough. The Marlins went 7-19 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.

Andrew Cashner started for Miami and had an abysmal outing. The veteran allowed seven runs in his two innings of work. Cashner left with the bases loaded and nobody out in the third inning after giving up a pair of walks and six hits.

Jake Esch will make his third big league start when the series continues on Tuesday.
