Marlins Stay Hot in Road Win Over Red Sox

The Marlins won for the fourth time in their last five chances on Saturday against Boston

The Miami Marlins continued their recent success with an 11-8 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday in Fort Myers.

Miami has won four of its last five games and two in a row overall. The Marlins now have a 5-5 record on the spring after a slow start. Miami's recent turnaround can be partially attributed to a heavier use of regulars, but that was not the case in this one. The Marlins only had one expected regular member of the lineup travel for Saturday's victory.

Five of Miami's runs came in the third inning, and the pitching staff did a solid job of making that hold up. Derek Dietrich got the scoring started with a two-run double in that frame. It was the first double as well as the first two runs batted in for Dietrich this spring.

Xavier Scruggs would follow Dietrich and hit a mammoth three-run home run on the first pitch of his at-bat. While the bench jobs remain up for grabs, Scruggs to this point is considered an unlikely choice. If the outfielder is unable to make the team, Scruggs is likely headed to AAA New Orleans in April.

Chris Narveson started the game for the Marlins and allowed no runs on four hits in three innings. Narveson spent parts of 2015 with the Marlins and is a candidate for the rotation or the bullpen. The veteran could offer Miami experience in what otherwise should be a young pitching staff.

Boston scored five times itself in the seventh and eighth innings to shrink Miami's lead. The runs came off of Craig Breslow and Cody Ege who are both competing for roles in the bullpen. Breslow is a former member of the Red Sox and now has a 4.91 E.R.A this spring. The Marlins would go on to rebound with three more runs of their own in the top of the ninth inning.

Miami will next host the New York Mets on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
