Mayor Carlos Gimenez Announces Bid For Reelection

The Miami-Dade mayoral election is set for Aug. 14

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced his bid for reelection Wednesday at La Carreta Restaurant on Bird Road.

During the announcement he reminded voters he kept his promise to reduce taxes and the size of government.

"I stand by my record and will proudly run on that record," Gimenez was quoted as saying in a Miami Herald political blog.

Gimenez was elected Miami-Dade's mayor last June after he defeated former Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina. The election was the result of the ousting of Carlos Alvarez in a historic recall election in March.

Gimenez, who graduated from Christopher Columbus High School and attended Barry University, is a longtime Miami-Dade resident.

Commissioner Joe Martinez is challenging Gimenez in the mayoral election, set for Aug. 14.
