Suspects On Bicycles Shoot and Kill Man in Miami: Police

One teen in custody, police looking for another who killed man in apparent robbery gone wrong

One teen is in custody and police are looking for another after police say they were involved in a robbery that ended with the shooting death of a man in Miami late Monday.

Police said Tuesday they are searching for the suspect who shot Jerry Wayne Sherrell, 54. The suspect is described as a black male with a thin build between 15 and 17 years old.

The shooting happened in the area of Northwest 54th Street and 3rd Avenue around 11:30 p.m., police said.

Police said the two suspects, who were on bicycles, were looking to rob someone when they spotted 54-year-old Jerry Wayne Sherrell with a cell phone and immediately approached him.

The victim was within a block of his home when he was approached by the two teens, Miami Police spokesman Det. Willie Moreno said.

One of the suspects demanded his cell phone while the other held him at gunpoint, according to police.

"There was some resistance from the victim, causing the second subject to shoot multiple times," Moreno said.

One witness tried to give Sherrell first aid but he died at the scene, police said.

The suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving the bicycles behind, police said.

When officers arrived, they spotted a suspect matching the description of one of the two suspects fleeing the area. A perimeter was set up and the 16-year-old suspect was arrested, police said.

Felipe Navarret was one of the residents of the Design Place housing complex on Northwest 54th Street concerned after the shooting.

"I am worried because my wife is by herself here with my two kids when I am at work. That's why I am leaving this area," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
