Meningitis Case Confirmed at Deerfield Park Elementary

The Broward County Public Schools confirmed Tuesday that a letter was sent to parents about a bacterial meningitis case at Deerfield Park Elementary.

The letter, which advises parents to take precautions, does not disclose whether a student or teacher has been sickened.

"The major signs of meningitis are high fever, chills, tiredness, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, rash, and stiffness in the neck and spine," Principal Jocelyn Reid told parents.

The disease is often spread through sneezing, coughing or sharing drinking glasses, she said. It can take 2-10 days for symptoms to develop after exposure.

A child who develops any of the symptoms should be seen by a health care provider immediately, Reid wrote.
