Cleaning up contaminated parks in Miami-Dade is likely to cost millions of dollars and will take months.
That's the conclusion the city commission has reached. The Miami Herald reported Sunday initial estimates put the cost of cleaning the parks at upward of $3 million.
Most of the parks will remain closed as the city determines the level of contamination. Workers found the contamination late last summer after some residents complained about tainted soil near an old municipal incinerator that operated through the 1970s.
The city and later the county conducted tests and found significant contamination where ash from the incinerator had been buried.
