A Florida congressional candidate is getting some unwanted attention after saying most people in her district "are uneducated."

Miami Beach City Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez made the comment during a Tuesday night candidate forum. She said "out of 740,000 people living in the district, only about 190,000 have college degrees, 90,000 have graduate degrees. But the vast majority of people in this district are uneducated."

The Miami Herald reports that Rosen Gonzalez, a community college English professor, says she meant to say "undereducated" for the current job market. She blamed the paper for the controversy, saying it had taken the quote out-of-context on its opinion page's Twitter account.

The paper's opinion editor said the quote was accurate.

Gonzalez is one of eight Democrats running to replace retiring Republican U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
