Miami Beach Police and Activists Teaming Up to Prevent Halloween Drunk Driving

Mothers Against Drunk Driving say the scariest part about Halloween isn't the spooky costumes or haunted houses, but that too many people don't plan for a safe ride before drinking alcohol.

With the Halloween weekend upon South Florida, MADD and the Miami Beach Police Department are teaming up curb drunk driving. The activists are encouraging party goers to use Uber, the ride-sharing app that allows you to request transportation, as a safe way to get home from their parties.

“Plan a safe way home before the fun begins,” encourages Miami Beach Police Spokesperson Ernesto Rodriguez. “With the variety of ride-share options available, there is no excuse to drink and drive.”

Uber says their app helps millions avoid drunk driving. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, in 2012 almost half of all fatal car accidents on Halloween night involved a drunk driver.

In order to facilitate the use of shared-ride services, Miami Beach will have four dedicated drop off and pick up locations on October 31 near Lincoln Road.
