A Miami-Dade firefighter is facing battery and false imprisonment charges related to an alleged domestic violence incident with his girlfriend, police said.
Ali Huleoarn Ponder, 44, is charged with domestic battery by strangulation and false imprisonment following his arrest in Miramar Tuesday, police said.
It's unknown if Ponder has an attorney. He's been placed on administrative assignment pending formal charges, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said Wednesday.
According to an arrest report, Ponder and his girlfriend, who have been living together since September 2015, got into a verbal altercation that became physical Monday night.
The girlfriend said during the fight Ponder choked her by putting both of his hands around her neck and held her in a bedroom for two hours, saying he would "smash her face in" if she left, the report said.
When she tried to get up from a bed he pushed her down, the report said.
Ponder admitted to police that he threatened to smash her face but said it was in the heat of the moment and he never would have followed through, the report said. He also denied choking or pushing her.
The report said no marks or bruises were found on the woman but she provided an audio recording of Ponder threatening to cause harm to her.
