Miami-Dade Police on Tuesday identified the teen who was shot by an officer while they say he was carrying a metal bat in Kendall.
Sebastian Gregory, 16, was shot by the officer around 3:30 a.m. Monday in the area of Sunset Drive near Southwest 160th Avenue, police said.
Police say an officer who was conducting a routine check in his patrol car spotted Gregory walking in the area with what appeared to be a shiny metal object in his waistband.
When the officer confronted Gregory, he reached for the object and the officer opened fire, police said. The object was later identified as a baseball bat.
Gregory was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital, where he was listed in stable but critical condition.
Gregory's father told NBC 6 his son was hit with four bullets. His brother, Juan Gregory, said his brother isn't a hoodlum.
"The bat probably was for defense. He keeps a weapon for defense,” Juan Gregory said, adding that he doesn't know why his brother was out that late.
