Miami-Dade Police Seek Talking Parrot Thief

Man stole talking Macaw parrot from home: Miami-Dade Police

Authorities are looking for a bird burglar who stole a talking parrot from a home in southwest Miami-Dade last week.

The burglary happened the morning of Aug. 20 at the home in the 3200 block of Southwest 64th Avenue, Miami-Dade Police said Friday.

Family members said they are broken up about the missing 4-year-old macaw named 'Papo.'

"They took a piece of my heart," 15-year-old Chakyra Rondon said.

Police said the unknown suspect entered the victim's backyard and took the yellow and blue Macaw parrot and fled the scene in a silver four-door BMW with dark tints.

Surveillance video from the homeowners shows the man entering the yard, throwing a towel over his shoulders and leaving with a bolt cutter and the macaw wrapped in the towel.

"It could be someone working this area," Miami-Dade Police Spokesman Robin Pinkard said. "Someone had to know this bird was in this, the owners', backyard in order to go back there and take the bird. It was the only thing that was taken."

According to the owner, the bird mimics the names of his owners -- Jonathan, Alex, Elvira, Chaky and Rodo -- along with the phrases que paso papo, flaca, ladra and tose, police said. The bird can also bark like a dog and cough.

The suspect is described as 35-45 years old, about 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds.

The family said they just want to see their bird returned safely.

"Bring him back, and not to have done anything bad to him," 10-year-old Rodolfo Rondon, Jr. said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
