Miami-Dade Schools to Consider Later Start Times for Next Year

What to Know

  • Various reports have proposed times including 8 a.m. for elementary school students and as late as 9:30 a.m. for high schools.

Students in Miami-Dade could get some extra sleep in the coming years as officials are debating whether to start classes later in the morning.

Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho tweeted late Wednesday night that the district approved the process of considering later start times starting in the 2020-21 school year. Carvalho said information is being gathered at this time about possible moves before continuing the process.

Carvahlo did not give details about when the times would be moved to, but various reports have proposed times including 8 a.m. for elementary school students and as late as 9:30 a.m. for high schools.

Officials are now evaluating such issues as after school care for the various schools, as later start times could have schools in the county getting out of class later than 4 p.m.
