Miami Gardens Police Investigate Drive-By Shooting That Left 1 Dead, 2 Injured

One man died. His fiance and a nephew were injured.

A neighborhood that should have been enjoying the long holiday weekend was brought to a standstill on Saturday.

Miami Gardens police were called to the scene following what appeared to be drive-by shooting that took a man's life.

Tiny orange cones, evidence markers, were sprinkled on the road, sidewalk and lawn in the Miami Gardens block near the intersection of NW 27th court and 201st Street.

Crime scene tape separated neighbors who ran out of their homes after hearing dozens of gunshots in rapid succession.

The shots were fired just after 3:30 p.m. in broad daylight.

According to the victim's family members, bullets nearly took the life of the woman he was slated to marry.

"It was a female, she was driving, she was injured, and is in critical condition," said Carlton Coleman, the Public Information Officer for Miami Gardens.

Miami Gardens police say the victims were all in a white vehicle, when someone inside another car opened fire.

In the car, according to the deceased man's family were his two nephews.

They say one of them, an adult, was injured. The second, only 12 years old, would survive.

The child is now a critical witness in this case.

"He's OK and detectives are talking to him," Coleman said.

Detectives are also trying to determine a motive - why and how someone could brazenly open fire into a car carrying several people, including a child.

Police have few leads. They do not have a tag number, but are asking for the public's help in locating a vehicle and its driver.

"A white SUV, a black male. He fled southbound on 27th Court and 199th [Street]," Coleman said.

Anyone with information that can help police is urged to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
