Fresh off their first appearance in the ACC Championship Game since joining the conference, the Miami Hurricanes will start off the 2018 season ranked as one of the top 10 teams in the country.
The USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll was released Thursday, with the ‘Canes and head coach Mark Richt coming in at No. 8 – their highest ranking to start off the season since 2005, when Miami also started at that same spot.
Miami rose as high as No. 2 in the country last season – winning their first 10 games, including their first win over rival Florida State this decade and a blowout victory at home over Notre Dame – before losing their final three games, including the conference title game to Clemson and the Orange Bowl against Wisconsin.
The Hurricanes will kick off the season September 2nd when they face No. 24 LSU in Arlington, Texas.
Miami is not the only Sunshine State team to find themselves ranked to start off 2018. FSU, under new head coach Willie Taggart, was ranked at No. 19 as the Seminoles will start off the season against No. 17 Virginia Tech on Labor Day in Tallahassee.
The UCF Knights, which finished last year unbeaten and created a firestorm by claiming a national championship despite not making the College Football Playoff, starts off the season ranked No. 23.
The Florida Gators, who finished 4-7 for their second losing record in the last five seasons, was among teams receiving votes along with the Florida Atlantic Owls and the USF Bulls.
