Miami Man Gets 14 Years for Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash

46-year-old Elia Soto was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident

A Florida man has been sentenced to more than 14 years in prison for a high-speed crash that left another man dead.

The Miami Herald reports that 46-year-old Elia Soto was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Prosecutors say Soto was driving nearly 100 mph in May 2017 on the MacArthur Causeway, which connects Miami and Miami Beach. Soto clipped a car driven by 57-year-old Naphtali Wacks, who lost control and slammed into a retaining wall. Wacks suffered serious injuries and died several days later.

Soto's rental SUV was later found abandoned. Miami Beach police used surveillance video to identify Soto, who was arrested a day after the crash.
