Miami Muslim Cleric Seeks Release

Cleric charged with supporting terrorist group wants out of jail

A Miami Muslim cleric accused of supporting a Pakistani terrorist group is seeking to reverse a judge's order that he remain jailed until trial.

The attorney for 76-year-old Hafiz Muhammad Sher Ali Kahn said in court papers Wednesday that there are numerous weaknesses in the U.S. case. Khan and five others are accused of wiring at least $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban, which is blamed for violent attacks a and plots against Pakistani and U.S. targets.

Attorney Khurrum Wahid says FBI recordings of conversations in the Pashto language could have faulty translations. Prosecutors say it's clear that Kahn meant to support terrorist attacks.

But Wahid says Khan is no danger to the community and won't flee prosecution. Khan is imam at a mosque in Miami.
