South Florida Music Teacher Arrested for Sex With Teen Student: Police

A south Florida music teacher at Miami Palmetto Senior High is facing charges after having sex with a 17-year-old student, police said.

Christopher Scottlevin Best, 28, was arrested Friday on 10 counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, Miami-Dade Police officials said Monday.

Best was released on Saturday after posting $75,000 bond and it was unknown if he has an attorney. Miami-Dade Public Schools released a statement saying Best had been fired.

"The school district was immediately notified of the allegations and based on their clear policies governing staff and students, Mr. Best is no longer employed by Miami-Dade County Public Schools," the statement said.

According to the arrest report, the teen girl befriended Best beginning in September and they started dating. She told police that during their nine-month relationship, they had sex at least 10 times, including in the music room at Miami Palmetto, the affidavit said.

They also had sex at various motels throughout Miami-Dade, the report said.

When detectives questioned Best, he admitted to having a "private" boyfriend and girlfriend relationship with the girl but denied having sex with her, the report said.

"Like any other crime involving minors, investigators are urging parents to speak with their children to ensure they were not victimized by Christopher Best," Miami-Dade Police said in a statement.

At the school Monday, students expressed disbelief at the arrest.

"I've heard of him and I heard he's a really good teacher," student Bianca Barrera said. "So I don't understand, like it doesn't make sense because I heard he's a good guy."

"I think it's not right, good thing they arrested him," Gustavo Altuve said. "Something could have happened with another student or something."
