Miami Police Shoot Man Who Stabbed Ex-Wife, Confronted Officer on Busy Street Overnight

A Miami man was taken to the hospital after being shot by a Miami Police officer – after he allegedly stabbed his ex-wife Monday night.

Officers responded to the scene near Southwest 36th Avenue after reports of a domestic incident around 10 p.m. Once there, they found a woman - later identified as 36-year-old Zuarmis Gonzalez - stabbed multiple times in the middle of the street. She was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center and is said to be in very critical condition.

"I just hope she gets better. Only God knows what to do. He's the only one that can take care of her," said the victim's friend, Ana Frontela.

Miami Police Deputy Chief Luis Cabrera said the man who stabbed the victim, later identified as 32-year-old Manuel Hernandez, fled the scene and later returned in a Chevy Cruze around 12:30 a.m., crashing into a Miami Police vehicle.

Cabrera told media members the man came out of the car - bleeding from his wrists - with a knife and went after an officer, who shot him in the shoulder.

That man was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Officials say the two had divorced just last week and have a teenage daughter.

The officer who shot the suspect is 23 and has been on the force for seven months. He was placed on administrative leave as part of protocol.

Flagler Street was closed for several hours during the investigation before re-opening shortly after 6 a.m., while West 36th Avenue remained closed between Flagler Street and SW 2nd Street for several more hours.
