Miami Police Officer, Wife Badly Injured in Crash While on Vacation

A City of Miami police officer is recovering at a Tennessee hospital after getting badly injured in a head-on collision while on vacation in Nashville.

Det. Antonio "Tony" Torres and his wife were involved in a nasty motorcycle crash with a suspected drunk driver, Miami police said. The couple was rushed to the hospital and had to undergo life-saving surgeries, according to the department.

Torres, a 24-year veteran of the department, is in serious, but stable condition and is scheduled to undergo another surgery this week. His wife is in stable condition, police said.

Torres' fellow officers are standing behind him during his recovery.

"Detective Torres has the spiritual, moral and financial support of his Miami Police family," Officer Kenia Fallat said in a statement released Wednesday. A GoFundMe page was set up in the couple's name, and more than $10,000 of the $20,000 needed was raised within four days.

The suspected drunk driver was under the influence of alcohol and methamphetamines, according to police.
