Miramar Police Honor Witnesses Who Helped During May Hit and Run Accident

What to Know

  • Miramar Police honored witnesses and those who helped out after a May 7th accident involving a mother and her two children.
  • Jessica Crane is alleged to have jumped a curb, hitting a pregnant Michelle James and her kids.

Just over one month after a horrific accident sent a pregnant mother and her two kids to the hospital, Miramar Police honored the witnesses who stopped to help and those who helped find the hit and run driver behind it all.

Chief Dexter Williams presented approximately nine witnesses to the May 7th accident with Certificates of Appreciation for their efforts, including the capture of 39 year old Jessica Crane.

Crane was driving near the intersection of S. University Driver and Pembroke Road when her car jumped the curb and stuck Michelle James, who was pregnant at the time, and her two kids.

Several witnesses stayed at the scene and administered aid to James and her children, while others followed Crane as she fled the scene. Over a mile later, they were able to block her car in, remove the keys from the ignition and physically restrain Crane from fleeing on foot.

"I was raged, when I saw the lady on the floor," said Ramon Rodriguez, who helped stop Crane. "We end up blocking [her] and jump out of the car, I didn't even [think] about it, shut down the car and the rest is history."

"If it weren't for their contribution, who would know how many others could've been injured that day," said Williams.

James' baby, a boy, was delivered by C-section the day of the crash but died four days later.

Crane, who faces 17 charges for the accident and chase, was recently placed back in jail until her trial begins after the State Attorney’s Office argued it was the only way to keep others safe.

Toxicology reports showed Crane at a blood alcohol level of .222, nearly three times the legal limit, at the time of the accident. She will be held in the Broward Detention Facility with no bond. Her next court date is scheduled for August 18th.
