Mother faces attempted murder charges in Miami Beach near drowning: Cops

A South Florida mother is facing attempted murder charges after police say she tried to kill her children by driving her car into Biscayne Bay.

Shirley Jean, 26, faces two counts of premeditated attempted murder after she drove her car off the Julia Tuttle Expressway and into the water Thursday afternoon, according to a Miami Beach Police arrest report released Friday.

In the car were her 7-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, police said.

A witness told police they saw Jean trying to push one of the children's heads underwater after the car went into the bay, according to the report.

When police arrived, Jean was in the water next to her car and tried to flee into deeper water, according to the report.

The two children had been pulled to shore by a the witness and two other men. Police were able to get Jean out of the water eventually.

According to the report, the girl told a Miami Beach Fire Rescue worker and witness that her mother was trying to drown her.

All three were taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution. Jean was later arrested and was expected to make her first court appearance Friday afternoon. It wasn't immediately known if she had an attorney.

It's the second alleged attempt by a South Florida mother to kill her children using her car this week.

On Monday, 46-year-old Jane Gonzalez was charged with attempted murder and child abuse after police say she intentionally drove her car into her Coral Springs home in a murder-suicide attempt.
