Mom Loses Custody of Kids After Daughter Burned Playing With Lighter

The South Florida mother whose young daughter accidentally set herself on fire while playing with a lighter lost custody of her children Wednesday.

A Judge ruled Heydi Trimino will be allowed to have supervised visits with her three children, who will remain in the custody of their grandmother.

Trimino, 27, was arrested on a child neglect charge Tuesday after her 8-year-old daughter lit herself on fire while playing with a lighter at the family's Florida City home. She was later released on bond.

After the judge ruled the children will stay with Marta Trimino, Heydi Trimino said she was happy with the decision but disappointed in herself for what happened.

Police said Trimino had left her children to go grocery shopping for more than an hour and a half. That's when the 8-year-old found a lighter and ignited her shirt.

A nearby neighbor came to the rescue and hosed the girl down. The little girl suffered burns to her arms and torso, and she's still recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Marta Trimino vows she’ll take better care.

“This will never happen again, never happen again, never happen again," she said after Wednesday's court hearing.
