Mother of Jose Fernandez Files Petition to Take Charge of Late Pitchers' Estate

The mother of the late Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez has filed a petition to be the one who administers her son's estate - part of the process to determine who will receive Fernandez's assets once they're released.

Fernandez was killed when the boat carrying the star player and two other men smashed into a jetty off of Miami Beach in the early morning hours of September 25, 2016.

The family's attorney says they are expecting some legal battles, but not between members of the family.

An autopsy found the 24-year-old had cocaine in his system and was drunk the night of the deadly crash – which came after he was seen drinking at one nightclub in Downtown Miami. Investigators still have not determined who was driving the boat.
