Mother, Son Charged in Fatal Robbery

Escambia County Sheriff's officials said store owner Phuong Truong was found dead behind the counter of his business on Sept. 13.

A mother and her teenage son have been arrested in connection with killing the owner of a convenience store in the Florida Panhandle.

Nineteen-year-old Dontonio Diaz Thornton was charged Friday with homicide and robbery and his 39-year-old mother, Willie Mae Thornton, was charged with battery, burglary and violating probation.

Escambia County Sheriff's officials said store owner Phuong Truong was found dead behind the counter of his business on September 13th.

Authorities said the Thorntons also stole the store's surveillance equipment, which made the investigation more difficult. But the Pensacola News Journal reports that found DNA evidence found in the store provided a major break in the investigation.

Prosecutors said Dontonio Thornton's case will go before a grand jury to face indictment on first degree murder charges.
