Murder Suspect Mistakenly Released From Broward Jail Caught in Georgia

A murder suspect who was mistakenly released from Broward County jail months ago has been caught in Georgia, officials said Wednesday.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office released 28-year-old Eric Vail on May 30 when a second-degree murder charge was dismissed even though he had been indicted by a grand jury earlier this year on a first-degree murder charge.

The investigation led authorities to a mobile home in Jesup, Georgia. BSO said Vail barricaded himself inside for hours before he was taken into custody.

He is expected to be extradited to Broward County to face one count of first-degree murder, BSO officials said.

BSO said a "communication issue within the court system" caused the mix-up and that the jail had not received any documentation from the clerk of courts that Vail was to remain in custody to face another charge.
