NCAA to Pay for FIU Player's Funeral

Football player's funeral to be held on Saturday

The NCAA has offered to step in and cover funeral costs for Florida International University football player Kendall Berry, who was murdered on campus last week.

Berry's family had started a public campaign to raise money for the expensive cost of burying their loved one, but it didn't take long for NCAA officials to step in. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday in Berry's hometown of Haines City.

The news is a bright spot in what has been a solemn time for the Golden Panthers.

Berry, 22, was stabbed to death outside the recreation center on Thursday by student and former teammate Quentin Wyche over a dispute involving Berry's girlfriend and some cookies.

Wyche, 22, is facing second-degree murder charges and is in a Miami-Dade jail.

On Monday, FIU held a memorial service for the running back and wide receiver who was blossoming into the team's best playmaker. Over 1,000 students and faculty attended the ceremony, which included emotional tributes from football team members and coach Mario Cristobal.

The university has also established a scholarship fund in Berry's name.
