The U.S. Mint is set to release a new quarter featuring the Everglades National Park.
A ceremonial release is scheduled for Thursday morning in Homestead, just on the eastern edge of the Everglades. Elected officials and community leaders will to join 600 students from the Miami-Dade County School District at the Harris Field Park Pavilion.
Under the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, the U.S. Mint is issuing coins emblematic of a national park or other national site in each state, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories. The release of the Everglades quarter coincides with the park's 67th anniversary. On Dec. 6, 1947, Congress set aside 1.5 million acres of land to be protected as Everglades National Park.
The final coin in the program will be released in 2021.
