New York Rape Suspect Detained Then Let Go in Florida

Police in Florida are searching for a New York man wanted on child sex charges a day after they briefly detained and released him due to procedural delays.

Pinellas Park police say authorities in Troy, N.Y., contacted them regarding 25-year-old Jesse Sawyer Jr., who is accused of raping three young children and then posing in pictures with them earlier this month.

Sgt. Adam Geissenberger says officers made contact with Sawyer at an address in Pinellas Park, near St. Petersburg. Sawyer was "cooperative" while police contacted the FBI to confirm the arrest warrant. But after an hour passed with no confirmation, they let Sawyer go.

A short time later, the FBI confirmed the warrant. But it was too late. When police returned to the location, Sawyer was gone.

An investigation continues.
