A morning fire caused a major evacuation of a retirement community in Deerfield Beach on Wednesday.

Rescue crews arrived at the scene inside the Century Village complex at 4114 Oakridge V just after 8 a.m., finding a fourth floor unit overtaken by smoke and flames.

Around 60 apartments were evacuated while firefighters put out the blaze. The homeowner was inside at the time, but got out uninjured when they heard a fire alarm go off while their apartment suffered serious damage. A unit below also suffered damage.

An investigation continues into what started the fire.
