North Miami Beach Officer Released From Hospital After Shooting

The North Miami Beach Police officer who was shot in the line of duty was released from the hospital Tuesday.

Officer Lino Diaz was released from Jackson Memorial Hospital just a day after undergoing surgery. He walked out of the hospital with his arm in a sling and his badge around his neck surrounded by family members.

"I'm still in pain but that's not my focus right now, my focus is completely on recovery so I can get back out there on the streets and protect the people out there," he said.

The veteran North Miami Beach officer was shot in the arm and leg on Friday while serving a search warrant for a federal investigation into unemployment fraud. Police said Diaz was pulled to safety by fellow officers.

Diaz said he will undergo physical therapy but is looking forward to going back on the job.

"That's my determination, my focus, my goal is to recover as quickly as possible, come back out here and serve and protect my community," he said.

Diaz thanked his fellow officers and the doctors and surgeons at Jackson Memorial, who performed a 4-hour surgery on him Monday.

"They fixed me up real good," Diaz said.

Meanwhile, an attorney for the suspect in the shooting, 26-year-old Elton Bandoo, appeared in court Tuesday to seek bond for his client. The judge ordered Bandoo to remain behind bars until his next hearing on Feb. 19.
