North Miami Officer Heads to Second Trial After Rejecting Plea Deal

Jury selection is underway in the retrial of a North Miami officer who shot an unarmed caretaker.

Jonathan Aledda declined an offer Monday to plead guilty to culpable negligence in exchange for probation and losing his law enforcement certification.

Aledda shot behavioral therapist Charles Kinsey back in 2016. Aledda said he was aiming for an autistic man holding a silver toy truck he thought was a gun.

Jurors in the first trial acquitted Aledda of one misdemeanor but failed to reach a decision on the other charges, including a second negligence charge and two counts of attempted manslaughter.

He faces 66 years in prison if convicted.
