Northwest Florida School Bus Driver Charged With Sexual Assault of Student

Authorities say a school bus driver in the Florida Panhandle is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old student.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports 45-year-old David Gordon O'Brien was arrested Thursday following an investigation into multiple allegations made by multiple students that he made inappropriate comments to students on his bus.

Walton County Sheriff's spokeswoman Catherine Rodriguez said the assault was discovered as investigators looked at videotape after a student made allegations in October about the inappropriate comments.

O'Brien is accused of making inappropriate comments and touching the victim in a sexual manner while on the school bus, according to the Walton County Sheriff's Office. They say O'Brien pulled off the side of a road and sexually assaulted the victim once all of the other children had been dropped off.

Superintendent Carlene Anderson immediately suspended O'Brien pending further investigation and reported the incident to the sheriff. O'Brien later resigned at her request.

He was arrested Thursday at his current job at the Graceville Correctional Facility. He's charged with capital sexual battery on a child under 18.

It isn't known if he's hired a lawyer.
