NY Robbery Fugitive Arrested in Miami Beach: Police

"[Derek] Harper was seen exiting his room crying, and was taken into custody without incident,” Miami Beach Police said in a statement.

A fugitive, who was responsible for numerous robberies in New York, was arrested in Miami Beach Tuesday.

Derek Harper, 58, was wanted by the New York Police Department for six bank robberies and three commercial robberies, according to Miami Beach Police.

When the New York Police  suspected that Harper was in Miami, they contacted the Miami Beach detectives and suggested they look for him at a Miami Beach hostel.

Later, authorities found that Harper was staying on the third floor of a hostel located at 2727 Indian Creek, police said.

To prepare for his arrest, a team of officers were placed on the third floor of the hostel and a perimeter was established around the building, according to authorities.

After organizing a plan, officers contacted Harper, who surrendered peacefully.

“A short time later, Harper was seen exiting his room crying, and was taken into custody without incident,” Miami Beach Police said in a statement.

Detectives will be flying to Miami on Wednesday from New York to follow up on his arrest.
