Group Rescues Horse ‘Dumped' in Florida Everglades

A horse that was "dumped" in the Florida Everglades on Thursday night is safe and under the care of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The horse, a 20-year-old Arabian gelding named Oliver, was abandoned near 120th Street and 197th Avenue in the Eastern Everglades, the group said in a Facebook post

The horse was covered in summer sores and extremely malnourished, the group said.

"When I pulled up, he had his head up and was snorting loudly at something only he could see in the distance — and he was ready to go. He still has a lot of life left in him," said Laurie Waggoner, with the SPCA.

SPCA officials said the horse was back safe at their ranch where he was receiving care.

The group said this is not the first time a horse was found in that area of the Everglades this week. Another horse was found in almost the exact same location and is also being cared for.

A third horse was discovered abandoned near Northwest 174th Street and 134th Avenue. There was also a report of a dead horse at the scene.
