One Trap Nets 26,000 Mosquitoes in Florida in Less Than 24 Hours

A trap buried in thousands of mosquitoes showcases another headache Hurricane Irma created when she blew through Florida.

Hernando County Mosquito Control reports there has been an increased number of a mosquito since the storm hit.

The agency posted a photo to Facebook that shows more than 26,000 of the pesky biters caught in a trap. The insects were trapped last Friday between 3 p.m. and 7 a.m. Officials were stunned with the number of bugs caught, noting that around the same time of the year about 500 mosquitoes are usually trapped.

The pile was “comprised of 10 different species of mosquitoes” and some of them can transmit diseases, mosquito control wrote on Facebook.

Officials in the county have intensified the fight against the bugs with nightly spraying and daily treatment of standing water.
