With over a month and a half left in the 2017 hurricane season, a record that has stood for over 100 years may soon be equalled, and could fall.
Tropical Storm Ophelia is expected to strengthen to a hurricane as it spins far out over the Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center says Ophelia is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday.
While the storm is no threat to land, attention is drawn to the fact it would be the 10th consecutive storm to become a hurricane this season — tying a streak that dates back to 1893.
The storm's maximum sustained winds early Tuesday are near 50 mph and the storm is centered about 790 miles west-southwest of the Azores and is moving southeast near 3 mph.
So far in 2017, there have been 15 named storms, with five of them major hurricanes and three reaching Category 5 status.
