Pair Get Prison in IRS Employee Carjacking in South Miami

Two Miami men were given prison time Tuesday for their roles in a violent armed carjacking of an IRS employee in 2014.

Ernest Bernard Hammett, 22, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release, while Carl Lee Williams, 23, was given 15 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

Both of them were also ordered to pay more than $35,000 in restitution, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

Authorities said the pair attacked the IRS employee in a parking garage in South Miami on May 29, 2014. They physically restrained, punched and choked the victim, and used a handgun to repeatedly hit the victim, who suffered serious bodily injury.

Hammett and Williams took the victim's jewelry, laptop, credit and debit cards and vehicle. Authorities tracked the vehicle to Brownsville, and Hammett and Williams were arrested after trying to flee on foot.
