Panhandle Man Gets 3 Life Terms for 2013 Murder

A man has been sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison after pleading guilty to torturing an elderly Florida Panhandle man to death.

David Ian Challender pleaded guilty Friday to charges of first-degree murder, armed burglary and armed robbery in the April 2013 death of 90-year-old Wallace Scott of Lynn Haven.

Authorities said Challender and his cousin Kevin Gene Jeffries killed Scott while trying to get his ATM card pin.

Jeffries was convicted in July of first-degree murder, armed burglary and armed robbery. The News Herald reports that the Bay County jury also recommended the death penalty. A judge will decide Jeffries' sentence later this year.

Challender and another Bay County inmate briefly escaped from jail in July, but he was caught the same day.
