Panther Killed in Southwest Florida

Officials say a Florida panther was killed by a vehicle on a southwest Florida road.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the young uncollared male was found Monday after being hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Immokalee Road and Everglades Boulevard in Collier County. The remains will be taken to a Gainesville facility for a necropsy.

Officials also reported that a cub was found dead last month. He likely couldn't care for himself after the death of his mother.

The News-Press reports that the total mortality figure for 2015 stands at 34, with 24 road mortalities.

Florida panthers once roamed the entire southeastern U.S., but only around 180 remain in the wild.
