Part of I-95 to Be Designated for FHP Trooper Killed in the Line of Duty

A portion of I-95 in Broward County will be renamed in honor of a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who was killed in the line of duty more than 20 years ago.

The Trooper Kimberly Ann Hurd Memorial Highway will start at the Broward/Palm Beach County line and run to Sample Road.

A dedication ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Hurd was conducting a traffic stop on southbound I-95 in Pompano Beach on July 16, 1992 when she was struck and killed by a van.

The driver, George Saffles, was intoxicated and fled the scene, the FHP said. He was later caught and sentenced to five years in prison.

Hurd, who was stationed in Fort Lauderdale, was 26 at the time of her death and had been with the FHP for six years.
