Pasco County Inmates Will Have Access to Email

Sheriff Chris Nocco says there will be no cost to taxpayers for the newly created "SmartJailMail" system

Some inmates at the Pasco County Jail will soon have access to email.

Sheriff Chris Nocco says there will be no cost to taxpayers for the newly created "SmartJailMail" system.

Seventy-seven kiosks are being set up in the jail's housing units, which will allow the inmates to read and send email to those people who have approved accounts.

Only email and photos sent through the SmartJailMail accounts will be permitted.  While inmates can receive email and photos, they will only be able to send email, not photos. Everything will be monitored by deputies, just like regular mail.

Each email will cost 50 cents; each photo will cost $1.

Inmates will also be able to use library services, schedule chaplain meetings, and organize other social service programs with the kiosks.
