Pedestrian Dies After Crash in Hallandale Beach; Investigation Underway

A driver shot himself after he crashed into a pedestrian, killing him, Sunday night in Hallandale Beach.

The incident happened at around 6 p.m. near Northeast 12th Avenue and Atlantic Shores Blvd.

Police said the deadly crash stemmed from a domestic dispute between a woman and a man. The man got into a white van and ran a stop sign on NE 12 Avenue, hitting a car at the intersection.

“The car that was struck, those parties were not injured in any way,” said Pedro Abut of the Hallandale Beach Police Department.

The van ran through a concrete barrier and hit a pedestrian -- a 24-year-old man from Hallandale Beach -- killing him.

The driver, a 34-year-old man from Miramar, then shot himself, police said. He was taken to Hollywood Memorial Regional in critical condition.

Carlos Oquendo Rodriguez, an area resident, said the driver of the white van was speeding down Northeast 12th Avenue and passed the stop sign. He saw the van hit the white car, as well as a pedestrian on the ground.

Police were speaking to the driver's girlfriend to figure out what exactly led to the crash.

No charges have been filed as of yet.
