After a dialogue with the woman, an officer fired their gun, striking the woman.

The woman did not shoot at the officers.

“The weapon was pointed toward the officer, the officer felt for his safety and fired at the victim," Miami Shores Police Chief Kevin Lystad said.

There have been a number of calls over the years at this particular location for various reasons, Lystad said.

Police have not released the identity of the woman. A family friend said she was in her late 40s and had past issues with her mental health.
