The crash took place in the northbound lanes of I-95 just after the exit for Southwest 8th Street as a Miami-Dade Police vehicle was stopped to help a disabled truck in the right lane when witnesses say a BMW slammed into the back of it.
Witnesses say the driver of the BMW attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was caught and handcuffed by officers at the scene. Investigators are working to determine if alcohol or speed played a role in the crash.
The police sergeant, who was not identified, was not hurt in the crash.
