Man Barricaded Inside SW Miami-Dade Home Turns Gun on Self: Police

Two women, children able to get out of home

A man who had barricaded himself inside a southwest Miami-Dade home after gunshots were fired Monday morning shot and killed himself, police said.

Miami-Dade Police officers responded to the home near Southwest 133rd Avenue and 209th Street around 6 a.m. after receiving a 911 call of a domestic incident.

As officers arrived, gunshots were heard, officials said. Two women and a child were able to run out of the home and tell officers about the situation inside.

"Upon the first unit's arrival they heard what appeared to be gunshots coming from the inside the residence. At the the same time two females and one juvenile exited the residence," Miami-Dade Police Det. Lee Cowart said. "Upon their exit, the arriving officers were able to interview them. They were able to determine there was one female juvenile still inside the residence and one adult male."

A police SWAT team responded and negotiators tried to get the man out of the home, but officials said he shot and killed himself. He was identified as 45-year-old Alfred Alvarez.

The other girl was able to safely get out of the home.

No other information was immediately known.
