Police Hope Selfie Leads to Grand Theft Auto Suspect

Miami-Dade Police are hoping a selfie will help them solve a grand theft auto case.

The incident began when 36-year-old Jean Mirabal arranged to buy a white 2002 Toyota 4-Runner his friend had seen in Doral back in August, police said Friday.

Mirabal's father and brother arranged to pay $3,500 for the car, and they conducted the transaction in a parking lot. During the transaction, Mirabal's father took a selfie that happened to capture the suspect in the background, police said.

When Mirabal went to register the vehicle the next day, he was told it had been reported stolen out of Hialeah. Two days later, the car was stolen from Mirabal's residence, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
