Family Unhurt as Police Investigating Overnight Home Invasion in SW Miami-Dade

Miami-Dade Police are investigating a home invasion in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Crews were called out to a home in the 9800 block of Southwest 159th Street just before 3:30 a.m. The call went out as a home invasion and robbery.

Police say that two men dressed as cops forced their way into the home wearing bullet proof vests while holding badges. They demanded a safe be opened before handcuffing the husband and wife who lived inside.

"We've never really had anything like this, and it's really surprising," one neighbor told NBC 6. Police identified the victims as Elizabeth Moore and Omar Alvarez.

The thieves stole an undetermined amount of money from inside the safe before fleeing the scene, police said. No injuries were reported from the couple or the three children who were inside sleeping at the time.

Police say criminals posing as officers will have some residents on edge, possibly second guessing their trust in officers. If an officer comes to your door, residents are instructed to tell the officer to announce who they are, and who they're with.
