Police Investigate Suspicious Device Near Barry University in Miami Shores

Officers respond to area near Miami Shores university for suspicious device

Officers issued an all-clear Wednesday morning after reports of a suspicious device in the area of Barry University turned out to be a hoax, police said.

The package was filled with toys that looked like explosive devices, said Miami Shores Police Chief Kevin Lystad.

"One was described as a plastic hand grenade," Lystad said.

The incident was reported around 8:30 a.m. near the school at 11300 Northeast 2nd Avenue in Miami Shores. Police did not evacuate the building.

Officers said it was still unclear who placed the package there and why.
