Suspect Arrested After Cab Driver Robbed, Shot in Brownsville

A man is in custody after police said he robbed and shot a cab driver in Brownsville Friday night.

The cab driver, identified as 63-year-old Terrence Guthrie, told police that a man stole $90 and shot him before fleeing in the area of NW 54 Street and 22nd Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Despite his injury, Guthrie said he followed the gunman a block away to a convenience store.

Miami-Dade Police said when officers responded to the scene, customers in the convenience store told them a suspicious person was hiding in a freezer. Officers evacuated the store and arrested 25-year-old Mark Simmons.

"We would like to thank the community for taking part in this investigation and being helpful to our officers," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Marjorie Eloi. "As a result of their information, we were able to take the subject into custody."

Paramedics rushed the cab driver to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he underwent surgery. His condition has not been released.
