Man Found Dead After Shooting, Hours-Long SWAT Standoff in Southwest Miami-Dade

A man was found dead after a shooting led to an hours-long standoff in southwest Miami-Dade Sunday.

The shooting was reported around 11 a.m. in the 11700 block of Southwest 18th Street, police said.

Police said it was a domestic incident and that a woman and her son were able to escape from the house before a man fired at officers and barricaded himself inside the home.

"Upon the officers' arrival they were approached by a subject that fired several shots at them," Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Robin Pinkard said. "The officers were able to retreat and return fire to the subject."

Several officers and a SWAT team were seen responding to the scene.

Witnesses reported hearing shots, and some said police told them to stay in their homes.

Police reported that the unidentified man was found dead when they entered the home around 5 p.m. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound.

"I am shaking, I'm glad to be out, I'm very nervous," said Michelle Miret, after the standoff ended. "We didn't know what it was, we just heard a loud noise, we were scared."

Police said it was unknown whether the suspect was struck during the exchange of gunfire.

The shooting caused the closing of both the northbound and southbound lanes of the nearby Florida's Turnpike between 8th Street and Bird Road. Students at nearby Florida International University also reported that they received an alert from the school.

The shooting is still being investigated.
